<image:title>Home - What is Montessori? Why do we do, what we do?</image:title>
<image:caption>The Montessori Method of Education was created and refined by Dr. Maria Montessori, one of Italy’s first female medical doctors at the turn of the 20th Century. The method is based on observation of young children by Montessori, who came to understand the child’s naturally absorbent mind. It is this unique capacity to absorb information which allows children to naturally incorporate experiences in the environment directly into their whole basic character and personality for life.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Year 3 and 5 students at Casa Mia participate in the NAPLAN assessment each year, as one measure of their progress in learning. In a Montessori classroom, student assessment is a dynamic and individualised process that prioritizes understanding each child's unique learning journey rather than solely focusing on traditional tests and grades. Teachers in Montessori environments use observation as a primary tool, carefully noting each student’s progress, interests, and challenges as they engage with hands-on materials and activities. This ongoing assessment allows educators to tailor instruction to each child’s developmental stage and needs, fostering a deeper, self-directed learning experience. Additionally, Montessori assessment emphasises self-evaluation and reflection, encouraging students to take an active role in their learning process and to set personal goals. This holistic approach ensures that assessment is not just a measure of what students know but also a guide for their growth and motivation in a supportive, nurturing environment.</image:caption>

We do not refer to school rules but rather to the rights and responsibilities of all members of the community. ‘Children as well as adults have human rights. <image:title>Principals Welcome - Principal’s Welcome</image:title>
<image:caption>It is an absolute pleasure to welcome you to Casa Mia. Welcome to Casa Mia, where education blossoms in a nurturing and dynamic Montessori environment! My name is Samantha Leyton, and I consider it a great privilege to lead this beautiful school. Our work is underpinned by authentic Montessori principles, keeping the child at the centre of all we do. At Casa Mia, we are dedicated to fostering a love of learning through an approach that respects each child's individuality and developmental needs. Our experienced and passionate educators provide a rich, hands-on curriculum designed to inspire curiosity, creativity, and critical thinking. We believe in cultivating individual responsibility, encouraging each child to take ownership of their learning, their choices, and their role within our community. Equally, we are committed to nurturing global citizenship, helping children to develop respect for diversity, an understanding of interconnectedness, and a sense of responsibility for the world around them. Within our classrooms, children learn to collaborate, communicate, and care for one another, building the foundations for a more peaceful and sustainable future. Casa Mia is also a connected community. Families, staff, and students come together to create a supportive environment where learning extends beyond the classroom. We value the partnerships with our families and the broader community that enrich the experiences of our children and deepen their sense of belonging. We cater for children aged 3–12 years old, starting at Children’s House, where children are introduced to sensorial materials that lay the foundations for complex concepts to come, through to Upper Primary, where students use reasoning, abstract thought, and imagination to explore and develop their understanding of the world. Our children delight in our shared play spaces, especially the favourite climbing tree, where friendships are built and joy is shared across ages. Above all, we are dedicated to offering an education that nurtures lifelong learning by integrating academic knowledge with social and emotional growth, while also fostering a deep connection with the environment and the wider world. We look forward to meeting you and being part of the learning journey of your child. Please use this website to take a virtual tour of our school, and we warmly invite you to visit us in person. - Samantha Leyton, Principal</image:caption>

<image:title>Casa Mia Montessori School Playgroup - Why Casa Mia Montessori School Playgroup?</image:title>
<image:caption>Casa Mia Montessori School Playgroup provides a prepared and facilitated environment for children aged 18 months-3 years and their parents/carers. Modern neuroscience confirms that most of the wiring in the human brain happens in the first three years of life. This forms the scaffolding upon which everything else is built. Understanding the needs of the developing child during this time is paramount. A Montessori environment for this age group honours and nurtures the child's innate drive towards independence; allowing them to participate in and practice many activities that foster independence and the natural development of the child. The inside and outside learning environment reflects order, beauty and simplicity and is set up in a way that allows children to choose and use the materials with minimal adult assistance. Parents are shown the importance of allowing their child to complete and repeat tasks without interruption or interference. There is a wide range of age-appropriate activities, prepared for by our Program Coordinator who will observe, guide and offer support where necessary. We run sessions on Mondays and Wednesdays from 9 - 11am.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Transition Process - Transition Phases</image:title>
<image:caption>Maria Montessori always looked at the child’s education in relation to the child. We follow the needs of the child, in each plane of development the child has different needs. Along with this, each child is an individual and needs to be supported where they are at. Our process for transitioning the child from part time to full-time or between each cycle encompasses more than just a child’s academic ability, it looks at their social readiness, the dynamics in each room, their emotional regulation skills and their independence and self-driven nature. Transition between phases: We aim to be flexible with transition and use observation and our teachers extensive knowledge and training to understand the intricacies of each individual child's developmental journey. 0-3 into 3-6 - This can happen any time after the child's 3rd birthday and once they are fully toilet trained. Please ensure you have completed an Application for Enrolment Form to ensure you are on our waitlist for 3-6/Children’s House. 3-6 Part-time to Full-time - This is a very gradual and gentle transition process. Usually around the time children are 4 years of age the teacher will conduct a readiness assessment and start looking at their develop as a whole. Parents of part-time children stay in close contact with their child's class teacher about their attendance. See below for a general guideline: * Meet and Greet - After the Enrolment process and you have received your Letter of Offer of a place you will be invited by your child's new teacher to attend this with your child in their new classroom. * Orientation Day - The first day your child attends. * 5 half days - Our 3 year-olds start on 5 half days, we liaise with parents if we feel the child is not yet ready for 5 half days and work with our families to meet the needs of the child. * 5 half days - Around your child's 4th birthday the teacher will determine their readiness for full time. This could occur anywhere between 4 and 5 years of age. * Gradual build up to 5 full days - Your child's class teacher will formulate a plan with you for this. Once readiness has been determined we gradually start introducing full days until your child is at 5 full days. 3-6 into 6-9 - Usually during either the child's Pre-Primary year or their Year 1 year of schooling. Transition times are at the start of the year and in Term 3. 6-9 into 9-12 - Usually during either the child's Year 3 or Year 4 year of schooling. Transition times are at the start of the year and in Term 3. We acknowledge that every child is different and so we aim to provide flexibility with transition with the children's ultimate benefit in mind. Transition timing is not just based on your child's birthday but on their social, emotional and academic development, as well as that of other children in their current and receiving cohorts. Our transition policy is linked below for those who would like a copy.</image:caption>

The small school creates a wonderful inclusive and focused environment for the children to experience growth, discovery, connection, joy and expression through learning and social adventures. <image:caption>The child is both a hope and promise for mankind – Maria Montessori What an honour it is to lead our beautiful school. Working with children and teachers is a joy that fills my spirit every day, and I consider myself so fortunate to be able to wake up and enjoy coming to work. Our greatest tool to enact change is Education, and we must consider and take time to ensure that what we are teaching, facilitating and encouraging in our environments, is in fact, equipping children to be the changemakers of the future. It is my hope that all children who come to Casa Mia Montessori feel valued, loved, a sense of belonging to our community and are given the opportunity to develop a life-long passion for learning. It is our job to plant the seeds and then work with you at home, to provide the right environment for them to flourish. Education should no longer be most imparting of knowledge, but must take a new path, seeking the release of human potentialities. – Maria Montessori</image:caption>

<image:caption>I have been working with children in Montessori environments for 12 years and hold a Bachelor of Arts and a Montessori 3-6 Diploma. I believe in creating stimulating, strategically planned, and fun classrooms for children to learn. I also believe that everyone is unique with great potential to succeed and thrive. My goal is to support and nurture children’s strengths, helping them to find joy and peace while learning. I am a mum of two wonderful and energetic children who have taught me how to be a better person and certainly a better teacher. They are the best teachers I know and my everything. Outside of work, I enjoy cooking; I like to think that I am a good cook! I enjoy spending time outdoors with my family; we love the beach! I love music, dance, and arts in general. I am a plant enthusiast working hard to keep them alive and happy. Travelling is a big YES for our family. We enjoy exploring local culture and food. I value diversity and the beauty in every culture. I am originally from Brazil and, as a “Good Brazilian,” I love soccer, my favourite sport. A good coffee always makes me smile.</image:caption>

<image:caption>My Montessori career began 14 years ago in Sri Lanka where I was a Kindergarten teacher. I completed my Montessori studies in 2008. What attracted me to the Montessori method of education is that it is a method that recognizes each child as an individual who learns at his or her own pace, a method which prepares a child for life. When I moved to Australia, I worked at Little Things Montessori Day Care as a room leader for 4 ½ years. Following that, I joined Riverlands Montessori school as an education assistant for 5 years. Here I am today with the privilege of being part of the Casa Mia community. I am looking forward to making more memories in supporting children in their learning journey and in helping them grow. I am grateful that this is the career path I have chosen. My hobby is making scented candles, an activity that brings me peace and happiness. My other interests include listening to music, watching movies and spending time with my young nephew. The child has a mind able to absorb knowledge. He has the power to teach himself. - Maria Montessori</image:caption>
